Abstract

ABSTRACT Gender analysis plays a crucial role in minimizing gender misunderstandings among students, fostering an equitable and gender sensitive learning environment, and empowering students to shape their own viewpoints beyond the influence of textbooks. This study focused on gender equality or inequity in the English textbook for Tenth Grade Senior High School entitled "English in Mind Student Book 3 Second Edition” Published by Cambridge University Press”. The Aim of this study were to determine how gender was represented in English textbook using Stockdale's gender representation theory, as well as which aspects of Stockdale's gender representation that were found in English textbooks were more dominant. This study used a qualitative research design of content analysis method. The data resources were the English in focus textbook as a document analysis. The data were collected through documentation. Data analysis consisted unitizing, sampling, recording/coding, reducing, inferring, narrating. Finally, the investigator triangulation was employed to evaluate the data analysis results. The results of an analysis of English textbooks showed that gender representation was unequal, with males dominating in all aspects of gender representation: visibility (main characters, named non-active characters, non-named non-active characters, and appearances in illustrations/photographs), firstness, nouns and pronouns, and discourse roles. Males appear 832 times, while females only appear 504 times. Nouns and pronouns are the most dominant aspect in English textbooks, followed by discourse role in the second position, visibility in the third position, and firstness in the fourth position. Keywords: Content Analysis; Gender Representation; Qualitative Research; English Textbook.
