Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to explore the representation of liberal feminism through the main female character in the film Educating Rita. Specifically, the research seeks to identify the various forms of liberal feminism embodied by Rita and to analyze how her personality traits reflect liberal feminist ideals. The study is motivated by the need to understand how literary and cinematic works can contribute to discussions on gender equality, empowerment, and identity formation. Using a qualitative approach, this study applies content analysis to assess the film‟s plot and character development. Data collection involved detailed observation of the protagonist‟s dialogues, actions, and social interactions throughout the film. The collected data were then systematically analyzed to reveal the presence and expression of liberal feminist values within Rita‟s personal journey. The findings reveal that seven types of liberal feminism are represented in the film: Educational Advancement, Freedom of Choice, Economic Independence, Self-Awareness, Rejection of Gender Discrimination, Role Balance, and Self and Social Reform. Among these, Educational Advancement emerged as the most dominant theme, with 12 out of 25 related dialogues emphasizing the transformative power of education. Furthermore, the study identifies eight prominent traits in Rita‟s character—determined, independent, ambitious, curious, resilient, compassionate, optimistic, and assertive—that align with liberal feminist ideals. Overall, Educating Rita effectively illustrates the core values of liberal feminism and offers valuable insights into how film can serve as a medium for promoting critical discourse in English education contexts.
