Abstract

ABSTRACT Readability level is a measurement of the suitability of a particular reading for readers to rank certain readers. It means that readability is an attempt to match the reading content with the reader‘s level of understanding. The objective of this study is to find out the readability level of the reading text in Cambridge Primary English Book for second grader of elementary school students. There are 12 reading passages which have the criteria to count the readability formula. This research is aimed to find the suitability of the readability levels of reading texts in Cambridge Primary English Book for second grader of elementary school. This research is a content analysis which is done by analyzing a written object such as textbook. The data collecting technique of this research is document analysis. In calculating readability level of reading texts, the researcher used the Dale Chall formula. After doing the analysis, the researcher found that there are twelve reading passage that have minimum 100 words. Based on the result of calculating the readability level, the researcher only found one text (0.08%) representative text in the appropriate level of second grade elementary school, the text is datum 1. 9 entitled How the Bear Lost his Tail with row score readability level 4.93 its suitable to used for fourth grade and below and as many as 11 (0.91%) reading passages have a readability level that is not suitable for second-grade elementary school students. It can be concluded that readability level of reading texts in the Cambridge Primary English Book for second grader students are not suitable with students grade level. Therefore, This Cambridge Primary English book has some texts that are not appropriate for the level of elementary school students. Teachers can first see the readability level of the text in the book before using it in class. Keywords: Cambridge English Book, Dale Chall formula, Readability level.
