Abstract

ABSTRACT The level of anxiety in learning to speak a new language can vary significantly among students, often influenced by a range of factors. It divides into three levels namely mild anxiety, moderate anxiety and severe anxiety. This research was aimed to analyze the level of students’ anxiety in mastering English speaking and to explore the factors of students’ anxiety in mastering English speaking at the Eighth Grade of SMP Bina Utama Datarajan Ulubelu Tanggamus. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by questionnaire and interview. The Foreign Language Anxiety Classroom Scale (FLACS) used as an instrument. The sample of this research was 35 students. The sampling technique was purposive sampling. The data were analyzed used Miles and Huberman’s theory namely data reduction, data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that students experience varying levels of anxiety when speaking English, with the majority categorized as having moderate anxiety and some experiencing severe anxiety. This means that speaking in a foreign language is a significant challenge that affects students' confidence and ability to communicate effectively. The presence of anxiety leads to hesitation, nervousness, and avoidance behaviors, which slow down their speaking performance. Students' speaking anxiety is caused by multiple factors, including fear of making mistakes, peer judgment, and performance pressure. Negative feedback from teachers, difficulties in pronunciation and fluency, and lack of exposure to English further contribute to their nervousness. Keywords: Anxiety, Level of Anxiety, Speaking.
