Abstract
ABSTRACT This research aims to analyze the role of interpersonal communication and its influence on group decision-making as portrayed in the film 12 Angry Men (1957), directed by Sidney Lumet. The film presents the deliberation process of twelve jurors who must decide the fate of a young man accused of murdering his father. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach and case study method, this research examines how interpersonal communication— both verbal and nonverbal—affects the attitudes, judgments, and final decisions of the jurors. The study applies the Uncertainty Reduction Theory by Charles Berger and Richard Calabrese to explore how communication reduces uncertainty and facilitates more effective interactions. The main focus lies on Juror 8, who employs rational persuasion, emotional appeal, and validation of legal principles to influence the other jurors. His persistent efforts to promote open discussion, challenge personal biases, and uphold the principle of reasonable doubt reflect the power of communication in shaping group dynamics. Through active listening, empathy, and logical argumentation, Juror 8 gradually shifts the group’s consensus from an initial guilty verdict toward a more reflective and just outcome. The findings indicate that interpersonal communication serves not only as a tool for exchanging information but also as a powerful mechanism for persuasion, consensus-building, and reinforcing moral responsibility in complex social situations. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of communication strategies in decision-making processes and highlights how films can serve as valuable texts for analyzing real-life interpersonal dynamics and ethical considerations. Keywords: interpersonal communication, influence, 12 Angry Men, decision-making, uncertainty reduction theory
