Abstract

ABSTRACT The ability to speak in public is an essential skill in the academic world. However, many students experience anxiety when making oral presentations in class, which can impact the quality of their delivery and their confidence. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of speaking anxiety during oral presentations in class, focusing on how this anxiety affects their ability to communicate effectively. Speaking anxiety, which is often triggered by certain classroom situations, is a common challenge that hinders students' confidence and performance in speaking skills. This study investigates the factors that contribute to speaking anxiety, and this study also investigates the types of anxiety that occur in this problem. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research methods with data collection techniques of questionnaires, and interviews. The subject of the research is fifth semester students of state Islamic University Raden Intan Lampung majoring in English education class A. Data analysis in this study includes various stages, namely data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the majority of students considered speaking anxiety to be caused by fear of negative judgment from classmates, lack of preparation, and fear of making mistakes in speaking. Furthermore, internal and external factors affect students' speaking anxiety. In addition, support from classmates and lecturers, as well as repeated presentation experiences, can help reduce students' anxiety levels. The findings are expected to provide insights for educational institutions in creating a learning environment that supports the development of students' speaking skills. The researcher suggests exploring a more diverse sample, perhaps as well as providing strategies to overcome anxiety in oral presentations. to gain a broader perspective on anxiety in speaking.
