Abstract

ABSTRACT Writing Ability is a skill to get deeper information in the text. The students' writing ability in SMPN 17 Tulang Bawang Barat was still low. To solve the problem, the researcher applied the EGRA technique to develop students' writing ability. This technique helped students become more active in learning English, especially in writing ability The objective of this research was to know whether there was a significant influence of applying EGRA (Exposure, Generalization, Reinforcement, Application) technique on students' writing ability in Narrative text at the Eighth grade of SMPN 17 Tulang Bawang Barat academic year 2024/2025. The research employed a quantitative, quasi-experimental design. The population consisted of 99 eighth-grade students from SMPN 17 Tulang Bawang Barat, divided into three classes. Two classes were sampled, with 33 students each for the experimental and control groups. The experimental group used the EGRA technique, while the control group used a conventional technique. Data was collected using essay tests, which had been tried out beforehand. Both groups took a pre-test before the treatment and a post-test afterward. Data analysis was performed using SPSS to conduct a paired sample t-test. In this research, it was found that there was an influence of applying EGRA technique on students' writing ability in Narrative text at the Eighth grade of SMPN 17 Tulang Bawang Barat academic year 2024/2025. It was proven from the result of the hypothetical test which showed that Sig. (P-value) or Sig. (2 tailed) of the equal variance was 0.000 and the α = 0.05. That means that Sig. (P-value) < α, Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. Therefore, there was a significant influence applying EGRA technique on Students Writing Ability in Narrative Text at the Eighth Grade of SMPN 17 Tulang Bawang Barat academic year 2024/2025.
