Abstract

ABSTRACT Translation plays a crucial role in cross-cultural communication, particularly in the context of film translation, where linguistic accuracy and cultural adaptation must be balanced. This research aims to analyze the translation methods used for the main character, Noa, in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes when translated from English to Indonesian. The study identifies and categorizes the different translation methods used, including word-for-word translation, literal translation, semantic translation, faithful translation, communicative translation, adaptation translation, and free translation. By examining the frequency and application of these methods, the research seeks to understand the dominant translation strategies employed and their impact on the target audience's comprehension and reception of the film's dialogue. This research employs a qualitative descriptive methodology to explore and interpret the translation techniques used in the film. Qualitative research provides a holistic approach that focuses on naturalistic observation and detailed analysis rather than experimental intervention. The data is collected through script analysis, with each line of dialogue categorized based on the translation method applied. This method allows for an in-depth examination of how different translation strategies contribute to meaning preservation, fluency, and cultural relevance. The study also evaluates how each method influences the naturalness and readability of the translated dialogue in the target language. The findings reveal that word-for-word translation is the most frequently used method, appearing 26 times, followed by faithful translation (20 times) and literal translation (12 times). Other methods, such as semantic, communicative, adaptation, and free translation, are used less frequently but play significant roles in maintaining contextual and cultural appropriateness. While word-for-word and literal translations ensure accuracy, they sometimes result in unnatural expressions. Conversely, semantic and communicative translations improve fluency and readability. These results highlight the importance of selecting appropriate translation methods to balance accuracy with naturalness in film translations, ultimately enhancing audience engagement and understanding.
