Abstract

ABSTRACT This study, titled "An Analysis of Authentic Material Used in Teaching Writing for Ninth Grade Students of Junior High School", investigates the application of authentic materials in enhancing writing skills among ninth-grade students at SMPN 35 Bandar Lampung. Authentic materials are an interesting teaching material because they use teaching materials that reflect the real world so that students can understand more about the material they are learning because they use teaching materials that they have previously seen or experienced in everyday life. The research aims to evaluate the suitability of these materials based on established selection criteria. This research used a qualitative descriptive approach. The data were collected through document analysis. The data analysis include unitizing, sampling, coding, data collection, data reduction,data analysis, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that the authentic materials used, particularly realia such as product packaging, align well with Brian Tomlinson's criteria for material selection: appropriateness, interesting, understandable, and up-to-date. These materials effectively engage students by connecting lessons to real-world contexts, improving motivation, and promoting active learning. The research underscores the potential of authentic materials to improve the quality of education by making learning more relevant and engaging for students. Future research could explore the long-term impacts of these materials on student outcomes and the integration of technology to enhance their effectiveness.
