Abstract

ABSTRACT Subtitling is a translation from spoken to written language that is usually located below the movie to help the audience understand the movie. In a subtitling, there are strategies used to produce an effective translation. Based on Gottlieb‟s theory there are 10 strategies used in translation namely expansion, paraphrase, transfer, imitation, transcription, condensation, dislocation, deletion, decimation, and resignation. Accuracy is needed so that the meaning conveyed is easily understood, based on Larson‟s theory there 2 qualities of translation there are accurate and inaccurate. Movie is a kind of audiovisual that tell story and convey messages that are shown in a televison or cinema or theater, and this research used movie entitled The School for Good and Evil that aired on Netflix, directed by Paul Feig based on Soman Chainani‟s novel. This research aims to identify and analyze subtitling strategies based on the theory of Gottlieb, and the accuracy of translation based on the theory of Larson in the movie The School for Good and Evil. This research uses qualitative method and the data source is from the English-Indonesian script of the movie The School for Good and Evil. The results of this study show that the researcher found 6 out of 10 strategies used and 588 data including expansion 12 data, paraphrase 89 data, transfer 421 data, imitation 24 data, condensation 38 data, deletion 4 data. The strategy that appears the most in this movie is transfer with 421 data out of 588 data, and the least is deletion with 4 data out of 588 data. However, no transcription, dislocation, decimation, and resignation strategies were found in the subtitle translation of The School for Good and Evil. The research shows that there are 588 out of 588 translation data that are accurate which means the translation in this movie is accurate.
