Abstract

ABSTRACT THE INFLUENCE OF ENGLISH DAY TOWARDS STUDENTS SPEAKING SKILLS AT THE EIGHTH GRADER IN A JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL OF OKU TIMUR SOUTH SUMATRA By Frebti Ariana This study aims to analyze the influence of the English Day program on the speaking skills of eighth-grade students in a junior high school in OKU Timur, South Sumatra. Speaking is a crucial skill in English learning, but many students face difficulties due to a lack of practice and confidence. The English Day program is designed to create an English-speaking environment where students are encouraged to communicate using English regularly. This research employs a quantitative approach with a quasi experimental design. The population consists of eighth-grade students, and the sample is selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, as well as questionnaires to measure students' attitudes toward the program. The results show a significant improvement in students' speaking skills after the implementation of the English Day program. Statistical analysis indicates that students who participated in English Day had higher speaking scores compared to those who did not. The findings suggest that English Day positively influences students' speaking abilities by increasing their confidence, vocabulary, and fluency. Therefore, it is recommended that schools implement English Day as a regular program to enhance students' English proficiency.
