Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is titled "Deconstructing the Colonial Gaze in "The Help" Movie: A Postcolonial Analysis. The main purpose of this research is to analyze how the movie "The Help" reflects the colonial gaze and how the use of language in the movie shows differences in social status and character identity through postcolonial and sociolinguistic approaches. The movie depicts the struggle of black characters, especially Aibileen and Minny, against the dominance of white characters in the 1960s United States. This research reveals how power dynamics and intercultural relations remain affected by the colonial system, as well as the importance of the individual's role in fighting for equality and social justice.The methodology used is descriptive qualitative analysis, with data collection techniques through documentation and content analysis of dialogue and movie narratives. The results show that the use of language in movies not only reflects social hierarchy, but also serves as a tool to shape identity and power. The contribution of this research is theoretical and practical, expected to be a reference in the research of literature and lingustics, especially in the postcolonial context. In addition, this research also increases the understanding of the importance of intercultural dialog and the rejection of all forms of discrimination. Thus, this movie serves as a tool to understand complex social issues and offers new insights into identity and power in a postcolonial context.
