Abstract
ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF ELLIPSIS IN STUDENT WRITING IN RECOUNT TEXT AT ELEVENTH GRADE OF SMAN 1 TRIMURJO LAMPUNG TENGAH ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024 By: Pria Darmawan Ellipses are those sentences from the previous two examples that include concealed words. In casual interactions with loved ones, friends, family, and closest relatives, ellipses are frequently utilized. Furthermore, ellipses are a common way for people to communicate with one another in everyday situations. The ellipsis is used in writing as well as speaking, particularly in texts that include dialogue, like screenplays for plays and movies that are referred to as spoken text. Human interactions are established and maintained through spoken language. Greek in origin, the word ellipsis means "fall short" since it removes a portion of the sentence. An ellipsis is a method of leaving out a word or words from a sentence without changing the meaning of the statement. An ellipsis is used when a speaker wishes to condense a discourse by removing passages or components that the audience can understand. Thus, the goal is to reduce the amount of talk without sacrificing the meaning that the speaker is trying to convey. The objective of this research is to find out the ellipsis perform by the students in their assignment. The area of ellipsis that has been taken into account in the research are based on the theory of to Halliday and Matthiessen. Based the theory the ellipsis is divided into three main types; nominal, verbal and clausal. From the research, 32 recount texts were gathered from the students‟ assignment. The researcher had divided the analysis criteria into three types consisted nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis, and clausal ellipsis. For nominal ellipsis, it was divided into 4 aspects of deictic, numerative, epithet, and classifier. For verbal ellipsis, it was divided into 2 aspects of lexical and operator. While for clausal ellipsis was divided into 3 aspects of modal, propositional and question-answer. This research used descriptive qualitative research design to obtain the final result of the research. iii The result of this research is the researcher found 122 sentences contained nominal ellipsis in the recount text that written by students of SMAN 1 Trimurjo Lampung Tengah. The classification is there were 49 sentences of Deictic element, 35 sentences of Numerative element, 4 sentence of Epithet element, and 34 sentences of Classifier. As its results, the nominal ellipsis gained the most prominent of ellipsis ellipsis found on students‟ of SMAN 1 Trimurjo Lampung Tengah recount text with score percentage 79 %. The researcher found 28 sentences contained verbal ellipsis in the recount text that written by students of SMAN 1 Trimurjo Lampung Tengah. The classification is there were 23 sentences of lexical element, 5 sentences of operator element, and 9 recount texts did not contain any verbal ellipsis. This ellipsis had scored 18% from a total 100% of ellipsis. The researcher found 4 sentences contained verbal ellipsis in the recount text that written by students of SMAN 1 Trimurjo Lampung Tengah. The ellipsis found were used modal element, while both other had no ellipsis from a total 32 recount texts. There were 28 recount texts did not contain any ellipsis.
