Abstract

ABSTRACT This research investigates the correlation between students’ mastery of the simple past tense and their ability to write recount texts. Conducted at SMPN 4 Bandar Lampung during the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year, the study focuses on eighth�grade students. Using a quantitative approach, a correlation design was employed to assess the relationship between these two variables. The sample consisted of 30 students selected through cluster random sampling. The students were administered a simple past tense test and tasked with writing a recount text, which was scored using an adapted analytic rating scale. The data was analyzed using SPSS, and the results revealed a significant positive correlation between students' simple past tense mastery and their ability to write recount texts. The findings suggest that students who demonstrated greater proficiency in the simple past tense were also more successful in writing structured and coherent recount texts. This research provides insights into the relationship between grammar mastery and writing proficiency, contributing to improvements in English language instruction at the junior high school level.
