Abstract
ABSTRACT CLASS CONFLICTS SEEN IN SNOWPIERCER FILM USING MARXIST THEORY BY : IKKE NURAINI Class conflict is a common thing that occurs in the social environment. Basically, society is a social structure that has various interests and hopes for each individual. Because of this diversity, it often holds the potential for conflict or dispute. This makes class conflict develop into a social phenomenon. Movies also contain reality phenomena that exist in society. That is because movies has the ability to reach many social segments, and have the potential to influence or shape views in society with the messages contained in them. Movies always record realities that grow and develop in society and then project them onto the screen. Objective of the research is to to find out what the base and superstructure are and how class conflict is shown in the film Snowpiercer based on Marxist theory. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The research subject is Bong Joon Ho's film Snowpiercer. The researcher used observation, documentation from journals, notes, articles, the internet, and other sources to collect the data. From the analysis it was found that there are several base and superstructure in the snowpiercer movie. Among them is a base which has two main classes, namely in the form of the proletariat and bourgeoisie, then raw materials, machines and equipment. The proletariat consists of people who live at the back of the train, and the bourgeoisie consists of people who live at the front of the train carriage. Meanwhile, the visible superstructures are art, family, culture, law, ideology, science and education. The law is in the interest of the bourgeoisie, which can influence the base directly. Ideology is also instilled in primary school children, namely through education, so that the bourgeoisie can still control and maintain the iii existence of economic classes in society. In addition, there is a conflict of poverty between the lower and upper classes. The upper class monopolises all the facilities on the train, and as a result, the lower class is oppressed. Even the upper class organises all the brutal law enforcement and discipline which represents the role of the state in suppressing dissent. This shows how institutions, such as the police or military, are used by the ruling class to maintain class power and control over workers. The upper classes exploited the lower classes and instilled ideologies that kept the class hierarchy intact. This makes the lower class aim to appease the upper class and take control of the machines. It is the idea of the proletariat controlling the means of production to dismantle the capitalist system and create a classless society. As a struggle to win the conflict, the lower class resorted to violent rebellion, which occurred in the middle class, resulting in many casualties, both from the upper class and the lower class.
