Abstract

ABSTRACT Vocabulary is fundamental for mastering any language. It underpins all four key language skills – reading, speaking, writing and listening. Recognizing that English words often have multiple meanings and are used differently across various fields, vocabulary instruction and learning must be adjusted to the specific students’ needs and relevant to their chosen field of study. Therefore, a teacher should choose an appropriate way to teach vocabulary. This research examines the influence of movie clips towards students’ vocabulary mastery in hospitality major. This research aims to determine whether there is a significant influence of using movie clips towards students’ vocabulary mastery in hospitality major. Using the quasi-experimental design, this study used pre-test and post-test as the data collecting technique. The study took place at one of Vocational High School in Bandar Lampung, involving 67 hospitality students as the sample that taken from two classes, XPH 1 and XPH 2. The instrument of this study was vocabulary test. The data was examined by using Paired Sample Test. The research finding indicates the significant influence of movie clips towards students’ vocabulary mastery in hospitality major. The result of hypothetical test revealed that the Sig. (p value) were < 0.001, means Sig. (p value) was less than Sig α = 0.05. Based on the result, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. This result unveils the movie clips have a significant influence on students’ vocabulary mastery and can be an effective media in the process of teaching and learning vocabulary.
