Abstract

ABSTRACT One way for a person to interact with others in society is through communication, and advertising is one of the communication media to motivate and persuade collectively to attract public interest in the published advertisement. This research aims to explore what kinds of linguistic elements used in advertisements and find the meaning behind their use to express the express message of the advertisement. This type of research is descriptive qualitative using a semiotic analysis framework. The research data are linguistic elements contained in education advertisement posters documented from the official website of The Heritage School. Through icons, indexes, and symbols, the visual elements strengthen the meaning of the poster theme so that it is easily understood by the reader. While the verbal elements are realized by directive speech so that the message is easier to understand. Understanding of the intended message and also indirect speech that considers the elements of politeness in conveying the message. The implication of this research is to increase the knowledge and awareness of school residents or their surroundings environment to do the right physical activity. The results showed that from the analysis of semiotic advertisements there are different icons and indexes but have the same symbol. Then in terms of pragmatic, the research findings in the three advertisements use direct and indirect sentences.
