Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines lexical cohesion, meaning, and function in the speeches of students from the English Education Study Program at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. Lexical cohesion plays a crucial role in ensuring fluency and connectivity in discourse, particularly in speaking. This research focuses on how students apply lexical cohesion in their speeches, analyzing how various elements of cohesion link sentences within the discourse. The findings reveal that students' utterances contain diverse forms of lexical cohesion, reflecting their efforts to establish meaningful connections between ideas. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study analyzes transcripts of speeches from 23 students based on Halliday and Hasan's theory. The data analysis includes reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. Results indicate that repetition is the most frequently used form of lexical cohesion, appearing 447 times, followed by collocations (80), synonyms (42), superordinate terms (40), and general words (30). The findings reveal students' strong reliance on repetition for cohesion, with other forms being less utilized. This pattern reflects their strategies for achieving coherence, essential for effective communication. Lexical cohesion enhances clarity, structures discourse, and reduces ambiguity, supporting interpretation. The study offers valuable insights for developing English teaching materials in higher education. Future studies could explore cultural and linguistic influences by comparing second-language English speakers' texts with those of native speakers, enriching our understanding of language learning processes.
