Abstract

ABSTRACT The first year in teaching is a crucial time for a teacher, making it challenging for a teacher to master the profession; this is the time teacher decide whether they want to continue or leave the field. This research aimed to explore the experiences of first year English teacher through Narrative Inquiry. This research investigated how challenges of first year teacher and strategies employs to overcome them. The research was focused on the experience of one first year English teacher at the elementary school of SD IT Pelita Khoirul Ummah Bandar Lampung. This research used narrative inquiry in qualitative design. The subject of this research is one first year English teacher. The research subject was taken from elementary level. In collecting the data, the writer used interview as the instrument of this research. Semi structured interview was used in this research. There were 12 questions for the interview. The interview took around 30 minutes. After the data was collected, the writer transcribed the recording and analyzed it by using narrative analysis to narrate the stories of research subject. Then the result of data arranged based on interrelated themes through Thematic analysis. The result of this research showed that it was found that the subject of this research has a challenge in teaching as a first-year teacher and she has strategies to overcome the challenges. Thus, it can be concluded that the findings suggest that while individual challenges in teaching may vary, various strategies can be effective in addressing these challenges. The writer suggested exploring more diverse samples, perhaps including first year teachers from different levels of areas like urban or rural schools. Another important aspect is to examine the experiences of first-year teachers across different levels of education, including elementary, middle school, high school, and post-secondary education or in different Methodological Approaches.
