Abstract

ABSTRACT This research analyzed the intercultural communication strategies utilized by characters the lost in translation movie. The primary objective was to identify and explore the various strategies employed by the characters to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries. The study focuses on the characters' utterances and their approaches to overcoming cultural and linguistic barriers. This research used qualitative descriptive as method, in collected the data used documentation the types of data used was utterences or sentences that produced by the character in that movie. The procces of data analysis used some steps data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the movie Lost in Translation effectively utilizes Barado’s intercultural communication theory, with various strategies employed by the characters throughout the film. The analysis identified 12 instances where intercultural communication strategies were applied. These strategies included speaking slowly and clearly, asking for clarification, and checking for understanding, all of which helped bridge the cultural gaps between the characters. However, the dominant strategy observed was providing information, which played a significant role in facilitating communication and understanding between individuals from different cultural backgrounds. This reflects the importance of clear, direct exchanges of information in overcoming intercultural barriers. The findings highlight how these strategies are crucial in real-world intercultural interactions, demonstrating that effective communication requires intentional effort and adaptation, especially in cross-cultural contexts. Ultimately, the film underscores the practical application of Barado's theory, showing how intercultural communication strategies can be utilized to navigate and resolve cultural misunderstandings.
