Abstract

ABSTRACT Listening skill is important in assisting knowledge and understanding of learning materials in foreign language education. Running dictation is a type of teaching technique in which students receive some verbal input, retain this in their memory briefly, and then write down what they hear. Several studies have been conducted to explore the practice of using running dictation to improve students' listening skills. However, relatively little empirical evidence explores how students engage in listening learning using running dictation. This research uses descriptive qualitative research using interviews, observation, and documentation as data collection techniques. Methodological triangulation was used to obtain data from different methods. The research subjects were ninth-grade students at SMP Amal Bakti. Data analysis in this research includes various stages including coding, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that: (1) Running dictation can drive direct student engagement in learning listening. (2) Running dictation can improve students' listening skills in depth so that students can work well in groups, increase learning motivation, and more easily understand learning material. In addition, this research has its own limitations due to the lack of samples in this study. Thus it can be concluded that the findings show that learning activities using running dictation can engage students directly and actively in the learning process and improve students' listening skills. The researcher suggests to explore more diverse sample, perhaps including students from other grade levels who have conducted learn use running dictation to gain a broader perspective on learn use running dictation for listening skills.
