Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN LEARNING LISTENING SKILL IN THE SECOND SEMESTER OF ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM AT UIN RADEN INTAN LAMPUNG BY MERIZA ANGRAINI Listening is the first languange skill than an individual acquires in someone life and the one only that most use for the rest of the life. Listening has a major contribution to succesful comunication and is a very important element in capturing the understanding of message. Based on preliminary research conducted by interviewed the lecturer at Raden Intan Lampung Islamic University, it was found that students still had trouble in understanding the audio given during the listening. Students at the second semester of English Study Program in UIN Raden Intan Lampung were still confused and found it difficult to understand the vocabulary spoken by native speakers. So, This study aimed to investigate the students difficulties and learning strategies used by the English Education Program students in the second semester in the Academic Listening. Descriptive qualitative research design was used in this study. Students at the second semester of English Study Program in UIN Raden Intan the sample consisted of 32 students’. were taken as samples because they had lower scores in listening than other classes. Document analysis, questionnaires, and interviews were used to collect data. The three main phases of data analysis are data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that the students have the highest diificulties in listening materials and physical setting. Based on the results of the study, the most dominant difficulty experienced by students when learning to listen is listening material. Long spoken texts are one of the factors that interfere with students' concentration during listening comprehension. This also makes it difficult for students to interpret what the speaker are saying, Students’ mostly confused with the theme given by the lecturer that is unfamiliar, and the environment they took are noisy can be caused them unconcentrated. However, to analyzed the students difficulties in learning listening is needed to know the best strategies to solved the problems in improving their ii knowledgeing and skill of listening. The findings showed that the students used metacognitive most dominant In metacognitive, they tended to make plans before study, paid attention to the speakers, and learned from previous mistakes. The study hopefully can increase Academic Listening students’ awareness of listening strategies that can help them during the learning process. Moreover, it is hoped to be useful for lecturers who want to teach Academic Listening and support students’ listening strategies. Keywords : students’ difficulties, listening skill, learning skill
