Abstract

ABSTRACT Perception about reading literacy culture are the way each individual or society views the importance of reading and understanding texts or writing in everyday life. Reading literacy culture is one of the habits of society which makes this activity an important part of daily life, especially in the world of education. Reading culture the importance to obtain information, better knowledge about various things. There are many things and benefits that we can get from cultivating literacy, this culture of reading, namely that it can improve critical, analytical and creative thinking skills as well as expand insight and knowledge. This research aims to obtain information regarding students' perception towards reading literacy culture. This research use qualitative method, in this research is a problem that occurs within the English preservice teacher environment of the English education department where English preservice teachers say the reason is that they are still lazy about reading or their awareness of the importance of reading is still low. Researchers have conducted interviews with several students majoring in English Education about their reading literacy culture as students and prospective English teachers. Based on the research results, researcher found that students' perceptions of the culture of reading literacy are still low and they choose to read books or novels (not educational) rather than textbooks or history. The finding of this research is the perception and understanding students involves exploring how they view and engage with reading withing their educational environment.
