Abstract

ANALYZING THE CHARACTERS OF WOMEN STRUGGLE IN THE NOVEL CIGARETTE GIRL BY RATIH KUMALA ABSTRACT BY: AIDA MAHARANI This study examines the portrayal of female characters and their struggles within the context of Ratih Kumala's novel, Cigarette Girl. Through a close reading of the text, the research aims to illuminate the multifaceted challenges faced by women in the narrative, exploring themes of societal expectations, gender roles, and the pursuit of individual agency. The study will utilize feminist literary theory as a framework for analyzing the characters' experiences, examining how societal norms, patriarchal structures, and cultural expectations shape their lives and choices. The research will focus on identifying the dominant societal expectations and gender roles imposed upon women in the novel's setting. This will involve analyzing the characters' interactions with family, friends, and society at large, highlighting the limitations and pressures they face. Furthermore, the study will examine the characters' individual struggles and their attempts to navigate these societal constraints. This will involve analyzing their actions, motivations, and internal conflicts, highlighting their agency and resilience in the face of adversity. Finally, the research will explore the impact of these struggles on the characters' personal growth and development, examining how their experiences shape their perspectives, relationships, and ultimately, their identities. By employing a feminist literary approach, this study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the social and cultural dynamics that shape women's lives and the ongoing struggle for equality and agency. The research will shed light on the complexities of female characters' experiences in Cigarette Girl, providing insights into the challenges and triumphs of women navigating a patriarchal society.
