Abstract
ABSTRACT This research discussed about speech act analysis especially assertive and commissive illocutionary speech acts in Simon Sinek‟s speech. The subject of this research is video Simon Sinek‟s Speech. This research aims to find out what types and functions of assertive and commissive speech are used in Simon Sinek's speeches based on Searle and Vanderveken's theory. The design of this research is qualitative descriptive research and uses documentation to obtain data, the instrument of this research is the researcher herself and questions. In analyzing the data used steps by Males and Huberman, the steps in conducting this research are data collection, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This research used theoretical triangulation and expert validation for the reliability of the data. The results of research on Simon Sinek's video speech entitled 5 rules to follow as your spark and Learn How great leaders inspire action, researchers found that there were a total of 56 utterances which were categorized as assertive and commissive speech acts, in assertiveness there were 1 Asserting, 3 claiming, 6 Affirming, 5 stating, 5 reporting, 4 Informing, 5 Notifying, 4 reminding, 3 Predicting and 8 Suggesting, in this utterance there were no utterances classified as Admitting. In commissive there are 3 consents, 4 refuses, 4 offers, and 1threaten. From the research results, assertive illocutionary speech acts are more dominant than commissive speech acts.
