Abstract

ABSTRACT In learning English, students often face difficulties when studying grammar, especially tenses. Students usually found difficulties in learning tenses because there were numerous kinds of tenses in English that should be learned and grammar also had its formulation, for instance, simple past tense. The objective of this research was to discover whether the literature circle method was effective for teaching simple past tense. This research was conducted using quantitative methods, quasi-experimental design. The population of this research was all students at second grade of a Junior High School in Bandar Lampung. Cluster random sampling was used as a sampling technique. The sample included two classes: VIII B as the experimental class and VIII D as the control class. After conducting a pre-test and post-test to collect the data, then the researcher conducted prerequisite tests and hypothesis testing using the Independent Sample T-test. Based on the hypothesis test, the independent sample t-test showed that the value of the Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 < α = 0.05. Considering the above calculation, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that there was a significant effect of using the literature circle method in teaching the simple past tense.
