Abstract

ABSTRACT Picturebooks play a vital role in children's education, offering opportunities for engagement, understanding, and critical thinking. In academic settings, they help students comprehend the world and connect with their studies. However, limited research has focused on the content of picturebooks through semiotic and pragmatic lenses, especially using Peirce's semiotic theory and Yule's pragmatic theory. This research aims to: 1) identify signs in selected illustrations of ‗The Tin-pot Foreign General and The Old Iron Woman‘ Picturebook; 2) explain the relationship between the signs and their objects; 3) discover speech acts in the illustrations. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach within a semio-pragmatic analysis framework. Peirce's semiotic theory was applied to analyze visual data, while Yule's pragmatic theory examined verbal data. The analysis revealed various signs within the selected illustrations. There are 6 icons, 8 indexes, and 4 symbols. Icons directly related to their objects through resemblance. Indexes showed a causal relationship or pointed explicitly to their objects. Symbols had cultural interpretations connecting them to their objects. Additionally, the primary speech act identified was the representative speech act, used to provide information and describe conditions in the illustrations. The narrative text included both direct and indirect speech acts. This study highlights the complexity and depth of picturebook content, demonstrating the value of a semiopragmatic approach in understanding children's literature. Keywords: Picturebook, Pragmatics, Semiotics.
