Abstract

ABSTRACT America as one of the most influencetial members of NATO, reacted to the incident, and one of the reactions that was conveyed was the critism that was conveyed thorugh the speech of Joe Bidden as Present of USA.People exchange their ideas or attitudes about something and exchange meaning. When they can make sentences correctly, then they succeed in creating meaning and they can convey and show certain ideas and attitudes to the audience. Halliday and Matthiessen state that when language is used every time we speak, there is always something else going on. While interpreting, language also builds our personal and social relationships with others around us. So, when we use language whether spoken or written, it has a specific purpose such as giving information, making an offer or an order, language also enforces our personal and social relationships with other people.1 Speeches are often seen in various events. This study aimd 1) to identify the types of modalities in the speech of the Ukrainian invasion by Joe Biden.and 2) too analyze the meaning interpreted from the use ofmodality by Joe Biden. This study used descriptive qualitative as method, in analyzed the data by used data condensation, data description and make the conclusion the modality found in Joe Biden Speech, the data found were Inclination, Potentianlity, usuality, obligation, and probability. The analysis of modality types reveals a diverse range of linguistic expressions within the dataset. Inclination, representing a preference or tendency, is identified five times, constituting 13% of the total instances. Probability, indicating the likelihood of an event, is the most prevalent modality type with 22 occurrences, making up 58% of the dataset. Obligation, signaling a sense of duty or necessity, is present three times, contributing 7% to the overall instances. Usuality, denoting habitual actions or routine, is observed four times, accounting for 11% of the data. Finally, potentiality/ability, expressing the capability or possibility of an action, occurs four times, also making up 11% of the total instances. This breakdown provides a comprehensive overview of the distribution of modality types in the dataset. Keyword : Modality, Joe biden Speech
