Abstract

ABSTRACT Semantics is branch in linguistics that study about meaning. Textbook is the most common information source used in the classroom. Students can increase their knowledge and get new information with it. Students also read textbook for pleasure such as when they read narrative text. However, students occasionally feel difficult to comprehend the text because they do not understand the meaning of the word related to the context. Moreover, meaning is crucial in order to know what are the stories about. This research aimed to find out the contextual meaning contained in three narrative text provided in English for Nusantara Textbook for 8th Grade. This research employed descriptive qualitative research design. The researcher used documentation in collecting the data since the data source was in the form of document. The object in this research was Narrative Text provided in English for Nusantara Textbook for 8th Grade. In analyzing the contextual meaning, the researcher used the theory of contextual meaning by Parera. Finally, the researcher used investigator triangulation to validate the findings. The result of this research was that from three narrative texts in English for Nusantara Textbook for 8 th Grade there were fourty sentences had meanings based on the context of the story. There were nine out of eleven context has appeared, with Situational Context as the most types of contextual meaning that has appeared. It can be said that the meaning of words or languages that were used in the texts cannot be seen just from their lexical meaning because the meaning of words related to the context of situation. The meaning of words or languages that were used in three narrative texts in the textbook was determined by the context of the story itself.
