Abstract

ABSTRACT Politeness strategy is a part of pragmatic study. Politeness strategy are ways to convey the speech acts as polite as possible. To achieve that, there are some strategies that can be applied in specific context used by an individual in certain society. As reported by Brown and Levinson, there are four politeness strategies consits of bald of record, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record strategy. The objective of this study was to know the types of politeness strategy, the dominant type of politeness strategy and how the main character, Mirabel, perform politeness strategy found in Encanto movie. This research was qualitative descriptive research that used documentation in collecting data. The instruments of this research were documents and the theory of politeness strategy by Brown and Levinson. This research focused on analyzing the types of politeness strategy found in Encanto movie. The techniques of data analysis were done by data reduction, data display, and drawing conclussion. This research focused on analyzing the types of politeness strategy and the dominant types of politeness strategy found in Encanto movie. The results of the analysis showed that: first, 4 types of politeness strategy were foud based on Brown and Levinson theory: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. The data showed that there were 69 politeness strategy found in Encanto movie, 17 bald on record types, 35 positive politeness types, 6 negative politeness types, and 11 off record types. Second, the data showed that 69 politeness strategy had different percentages on the number of politeness that appeared in the movie. Bald on record had 25% frequently used, positive politeness had 51% frequently used, negative politeness had 9% frequently used, and off record had 16% frequently used. It was made positive politeness were the dominant types of politeness strategy used in Encanto movie. Keywords: Descriptive Qualitative Research, Encanto Movie, Politeness Strategy
