Abstract

ABSTRACT The directive act is one type of speech acts that has an essential function in communication. A directive speech acts is intended to get the conversation used to give instruction from the speaker to the listener. By utterance, the speaker tries to get the address to perform some act or refrain from performing an act. It means, the listener does what the speaker wants. Directive speech acts become important in communication among people. It is because the communication that happens must be said clearly. So, others will understand and there will not any misunderstandings between speaker and the listener. The purposes of this research are to find out what are the types of Directive speech acts in Like Stars on Earth movie and to know what are the dominant type of Directive speech acts in Like Stars on Earth movie. This research used library research as research design and descriptive qualitative research for the research approach. The researcher conducted the data based on the family characters in Like Stars on Earth movie. The primary data source of this research used Like Stars on Earth movie subtitle and Like Stars on Earth movie as. Then, the secondary data source from journals, books, and internet’s website. In conducting this research, the researcher used documentary technique to collect the data. The result of this research showed that there are six types of directive speech acts are used in the Like Stars on Earth movie. These six types are request, question, requirement, prohibitive, permissive, and advisories, with total number of 75 utterances contained by request with 13 utterances (17,3%), question with 28 utterances (37,3%), requirement with 14 utterances (18,7%), prohibitive with 8 utterances (10,7%), permissive with 4 utterances (5,3%), advisories with 8 utterances (10,7%). As a result, question is the dominant type of directive speech acts found in Like Stars on Earth movie. The contribution of Like Stars on Earth movie to education world is that can be the reference as a media for the teaching-learning process. Keyword: Directive Speech Acts, Movie, Speech Acts
