Abstract
ABSTRACT Students often make mistakes in writing descriptive texts about people, animals, objects, or procedures. When asked about the source of the error, they did not give a clear answer to the question, let alone an explanation of the source of the error. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of errors made by students and find out why students made mistakes in writing texts. The method used in this study is a qualitative description. Fifteen tenth-grade high school students were the subjects in this study. Data collection was carried out by presenting tests to students to write descriptive texts about people, animals, and procedures, and focus group interviews on finding out why students made mistakes. The data is based on seven indicators in writing, namely the title, main sentence, significant sentence development, sentence structure, grammar used, word use, and writing, and ten sources of errors that might cause students to make mistakes in writing. This study found that students made mistakes in describing people, animals, and procedures in the title, main sentence, significant sentence development, sentence structure, word choice, grammar, and mechanics. Meanwhile, the highest proportion of students' mistakes in writing is the students' indifference to their writing. This research aims to find out the errors experienced by students when writing descriptive texts and their causes. The method used was the descriptive qualitative method. The instruments used in this study were writing test and interviews. Data collection is done online or from social media. All students of class X majoring in social studies became the population in this study. Using a purposive sample, 15 students of class X IPS 2 were selected as samples. In analyzing the data, the writer used the theory from Jacobs which students' writing errors are calculated and classified into five writing aspects. The study results showed that students have errors in writing descriptive text. This was evidenced by the finding of errors in aspect content 2%, organization 3%, vocabulary 29%, language use 39%, and mechanics 27%. The analysis results revealed that the highest number of errors was the aspect of language use, especially in the use of verbs or auxiliary verbs. Besides, there are 3 categories of causes of student errors such as: lack of proficiency in text production skills, lack of practice time, and lack of feedback from teachers. Keywords: Descriptive Text, Error Analysis, Simple Present Tense
