Abstract

ABSTRACT Language is an interesting and complex communication tool that people used to convey their thoughts, feelings, argument, and ideas in a form that others can understand. Communication is one of the main goals of interacting with others through language. The language that a person uses to establish interactions between themselves and listeners show their attitudes towards the topic of their conversation. Modality express the speaker’s attitude, judgment, or consideration of what he or she is talking about. Movie is an audiovisual communication medium that used to deliver messages to the audience, both moral messages and the meaning of modalities presented in the movie. The aims of this research are to know the types of modality and the most dominant types of modality that used by the main character in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One movie. This research used descriptive qualitative research method. The data were collected by downloading and reading the movie transcript. The movie transcript was taken from the Scrap from the Loft. The finding shows that the main character in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One movie used all of the types of modality. The probability is the most dominant the types of modality that used by the main character in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One movie with the number of sentences used 27 times and the percentage is 47,4%. Then the modal of obligation occurs 21 times and the percentage is 36,8%. Furthermore, the modal of usuality occurs 5 times or about 8,8% and the modal of inclination occurs 4 times or about 7%. In addition, the type of modality that occurs most dominant used by the main character of the movie is probability, this means that the main character in the movie dominant used the probability to delivers his opinion, judgment and consideration about the topic of the conversation, that he believe there was a possibility for something to happen in the future.
