Abstract

ABSTRACT Numerous ELT textbooks with diverse qualities are widely available in global market. Yet every English textbook has certain limitations and shortcomings. Hence, being the essential and vital element in ELT, textbook shall not evade evaluations. This research aimed to convey the extent to English Way 3 textbook achieves Tomlinson’s criteria of good materials so that teachers can get the best of the textbook use or adapt supplementary or proper substitute textbook. English Way 3 textbook is implemented as the primary textbook in teaching process in various schools. Thus, the researcher considered that analysing its appropriateness to the criteria of good textbook is necessary. This qualitative study focused on how the English Way 3 textbook conforms the criteria of good textbook based on Tomlinson’s theory. The sub-focus of this study was to analyze how the textbook qualifies the sixteen criteria of Tomlinson’s model of materials analysis. The researcher applied document analysis in performing this study. The result of this study indicates that the textbook achieves high conformity on fourteen criteria. Nonetheless, the textbook achieves moderate conformity on the other two criteria for the similarity in text and illustration and lack of choices of optional extras for more positive and motivated learners. The findings indicates that English Way 3 is successfully meet the criteria with 95,89% conformity. Hence, the textbook is appropriate as learning source to be implemented in ELT classroom and teacher can supplement it with additional materials to facilitate the aspects textbook does not cover.
