Abstract

ABSTRACT There are many problems that faced by the students in the process of learning English. These problems occur when the students learning Simple Past Tense. Therefore, the researcher used Monopoly game to teach Simple Past Tense. Monopoly Game is one of the game that can improve students‟ Simple Past Tense. The objective of this research was to find out whether there is significant effect of using Monopoly game toward students‟ simple past tense mastery of the eight grade at SMPN 2 Pesawaran. The researcher was used quasi-experimental design to conducted this research. The population of this research was the eight grade students of SMPN 2 Pesawaran. This research was used cluster random sampling to determined the sample. The sample of this research consisted of 2 classes: 30 students in class VIII5 as the experimental class and 30 students in class VIII6 as the control class. In the experimental class Monopoly game was used, and in control class textbook was used. In collecting the data, the researcher used an instrument of Simple Past Tense test in the form of multiple choices with the total 25 items for pre-test and 25 items for post-test. After giving pre-test and post-test, the researcher analyzed the normality and homogeneity distribution data using SPSS version 25 to compute the Independent Sample t-Test. According to the data analysis calculated using SPSS, The table of independent sampel test, the result of sig 2 tailed = 0.035<0.05. it‟s was lower than < 0.05. It means that (Ho) was rejected and (Ha) was accepted. It means that Monopoly game has a significant effect on the students‟ Simple Past Tense mastery of eight grade at SMPN 2 Pesawaran. It can be concluded that Monopoly game is effective to improve students Simple Past Tense mastery at eight grade students at SMPN 2 Pesawaran.
