Abstract

ABSTRACT The aims of this study was to analyze types of figurative languages in the songs lyrics “Lover” album by Taylor Swift based on the theory of Laurence Perrine, and to figure out the most dominant figurative language which is used in the songs lyrics "Lover" by Taylor Swift. The types of figurative language included in this research are simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, hyperbole, symbol, and paradox. This study used descriptive qualitative to analyze the data. The object of this research is an album entitled Lover by Taylor Swift. The instruments of this research are the researcher itself. This research applied a documentary to carries out data collection. In analyzing the data, the concept by Miles and Huberman has used: data reduction, data display and conclusion. Moreover, the researcher analyzed the data by identifying, classifying, and noting down the data based on the types of figurative language. The pre-review and audit trial methods were applied to gain the trustworthiness of the data by consulting her findings with her consultants validator. The result of this research found 64 data of figurative language used in Taylor Swift’s “Lover” album . There are 11 data of simile, 22 data of metaphor, 7 data of personification, 2 data of synecdoche, 15 data of hyperbole, 5 data of symbol, and 2 data of paradox. As a result, metaphor is the dominant type of figurative language used most often in Taylor Swift’s “Lover” album. Methaphor is a kind of analogy to distinguish two things directly in a brief form without using word “like” or “as”. Key word : Figurative Language, Taylor Swift, Lover
