Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF IMPLICATURE PRAGMATICS CONVERSATIONAL FREEDOM WRITERS MOVIE By: Bima Alif Afiv 1811040132 Implicature refers to what is implied in conversation or left unsaid in actual language use. This research focuses on a pragmatic analysis of conversational implicature in the movie Freedom Writers. Specifically, it examines the implied meanings or implicatures of utterances, including generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature. Additionally, the research investigates types of flouting maxims, such as the flouting of the maxims of quantity, quality, relation, and manner. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data, with the primary source being the movie Freedom Writers, directed by Richard LaGravenese and released on January 5, 2007. The analysis is based on the characters' utterances. The researcher used data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions to analyze the data, employing investigator and theoretical triangulation to ensure data validity. The findings reveal that the characters generate both types of conversational implicature. Out of 19 instances of implicature, 10 were particularized conversational implicatures, while 9 were generalized conversational implicatures. The frequent use of particularized conversational implicature was attributed to the shared background knowledge between the characters and their hearers, minimizing the risk of misunderstanding. Furthermore, the characters flouted the four cooperative principles: quantity, quality, relation, and manner. The maxim of relation was flouted the most, with 8 out of 19 instances, as the characters often wanted their interlocutors to infer meaning from their statements.
