Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF COMPOUND WORDS IN THE “PAY IT FORWARD” MOVIE This research discussed about compound words in a movie entitled “An Analysis of Compound Words in the pay it forward movie”. The objective of this research were to find out the type, function and meaning of the compound words. This research focused on analyzing the compound words found in "Pay It Forward" movie, such as the type and meaning of the compound words. This research answered several problems including the type of the compound words, the function of the compound words and the meaning of the compound words in "Pay It Forward movie” classified. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. The process of data analysis needed a detailed description based on the characteristics of the compound words. The theory was used as the basis for data analysis was O‟Grady, William and Michael Dobrovolsky, which about the type of the compound words, such as endocentric compound and exocentric compound. The second theory was Gerald P. Delahunty & Garvey about the function of the compound words, such as compound noun, verb, adjective, adverb and neo-classical compound. The data were collected through a transcript process then continued to identify and classify the data based on the type, function and meaning of the compound words. The results of this research showed that 30 compound words were found in all the conversations in "Pay It Forward" movie. Based on the two research problems, it consists 25 endocentric Meaning, 5 exocentric Meaning. Then, it were found 5 functions of the compound words; 24 compound nouns, 4 compound verb, 2 compound adjective Keywords: Compound Type, Compound Meaning.
