Abstract

ABSTRACT Reading is an important activitity that can helps students for understanding on written work and improved their ability in English. Based on the preliminary research,the results showed many problems faced by students in reading comprehension,one of the problems was students in reading comprehension was students feel unenthusiastic and bored in reading descriptive text. To solve this problem,the researcher applied Herringbone technique. Herringbone technique is teaching technique for reading comprehension by helping students in identifying main ideas and supporting ideas by answering the W-H questions. The objective of this research was to know whether there was an effect of Herringbone technique towards Students' Reading Comprehension in Descriptive Text or not. The research design used was quasi experimental design. The sample was taken from two classes, VII.1 and VII.2 which consisted 37 students. The population of this research was the seventh grade of MTS Al-Ikhlas Pemetung Basuki. The treatment was carried out in 3 meetings with 2 x 35 minutes for each class. In collecting data, the researcher conducted pre-test and post-test, researcher used test instrument in the form multiple choice. After administering pre-test and post-test, the researcher analyzed the data by using SPSS to compute independent sample t-test. The results of statistical calculations, it can be seen that Sig. = 0.001 and α = 0.05. This proved that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted because Sig. < α = 0.001. In other words, the Herringbone technique could significantly effect students' reading comprehension of descriptive text in seventh grade of MTs Al-Ikhlas Pemetung Basuki in the academic year of 2023/2024 .
