Abstract

The RME approach is used to increase student understanding through realistic contexts and progressive learning models. Learning barriers studied include difficulties in understanding the concept of mathematical representation, application of symbolic notation, and limitations in verbal and visual communication. This research was conducted at Dharmapala Panjang Middle School on class IX students using a qualitative descriptive approach. Data collection was carried out through written tests, interviews, observation and documentation. The results of the analysis show that students' main obstacles include the inability to connect mathematical concepts with real contexts, errors in building mathematical models, and a lack of understanding of mathematical symbols and notation. This research contributes to developing more effective RME based learning strategies, such as the use of concrete models, interactive discussions, and an emphasis on exploring contextual problems. It is hoped that the research results can improve students' mathematical representation abilities and provide new insights for curriculum development and mathematics teaching methods at the secondary school level.
