Abstract

ABSTRACT Currently, the awareness of the importance of English is considered to be lacking in the school environment, this can be seen from the many students who do not know what the importance of learning English is. This lack of knowledge has a negative impact on the achievement of students in the future. The lack of knowledge of the importance of English occurs at SMP Negeri 3 Mesuji, English learning at the school is still passive Based on the results of observations and interviews with English teachers, it shows that the student learning process is still quite alarming with the initial value of students who only reach an average of 6. To overcome these problems, researchers apply the Sustained Silent Reading strategy. Sustained Silent Reading is a very simple strategy that emphasizes students to read silently, this can make students more concentrated and focused to identify the information contained in the text. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a significant effect of using Sustained Silent Reading strategy on students' reading comprehension in report text. The research methodology used was quasi experimental design. The population of this study were eighth grade students of SMPN 3 Mesuji. The samples of this study were two classes consisting of 30 grade VIII students for the experimental group and 30 grade VIII students for the control group. In the experimental group, the researcher used the Sustained Silent Reading method. The treatment was conducted in 5 meetings for each class. In collecting data, researchers used instruments in the form of multiple choice questions that had been tested before treatment. The instrument was given during the pre-test and post-test. Before giving treatment, researchers gave a pre-test for both classes. Then, after the treatment, the instrument was given in the form of a post-test. After giving the pre-test and post-test, researchers analyzed the data using SPSS to calculate the independent sample t-test. Based on the results obtained in the independent sample t-test in table 3, that the resulting significant value Sig. (Pvalue) = 0.014 < α = 0.05. So, Hα is accepted and Ho is rejected. Based on the results of these calculations, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of the use of Sustained Silent Reading on students' reading comprehension in the report text in the eleventh grade of SMP Negeri 3 Mesuji.
