Abstract

ABSTRACT Picture can be used to help the students in learning many skills in English, included learning writing. The objective of this research was to find out the students’ perception to the use of picture as media used by the English teacher in teaching writing descriptive text. It specifically discussed about the students’ perception whether good or bad in writing activity when they were given picture by the teacher. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative. The research used two instruments in order to find out the students’ perception to the use of picture as media used by the English teacher in teaching writing descriptive text namely interview and questionnaire. The sample of this research was 26 students at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Pagelaran. The data were collected by 10 questions in interview and 10 questions in questionnaire. This research used trustworthiness of method to validate the data of research, then there was also lecturer who validated the findings. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the students assumed that picture media could help them write well because with pictures they could easily explore ideas and put them into written form. However, students also assume that using picture media was a bit boring, although quite a few of them assume that they are interested in carrying out writing activities using picture media at home to practice. Therefore, it was clear that the students' perceptions of the use of picture media used by teachers in learning writing descriptive text were very positive or good because students were assumed that the use of picture media could help them explore ideas and add writing ideas which they will ultimately put into written form. When writing descriptive text, students were assumed that it was easier for them to be helped by picture media. Keywords: Descriptive Text, Media, Picture, Writing.
