Abstract

Speaking is one of the crucial parts in teaching English in the school, so speaking is very important ability thought by the teacher and learned by the students. The students’ speaking ability in MTs N 2 Bandar Lampung is still low. Most of students still find difficulties in speaking, especially in expressing their idea. This research was about teaching and learning speaking through rap music media at the eighth grade of super regular class of MTs N 2 Bandar Lampung in the Second Semester of 2016/2017 Academic Year. The objectives of this research were to know the process of teaching and learning speaking through rap music media, to know the teacher’s problems in teaching speaking through rap music media and to know the students’ problems in learning speaking through rap music media. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research method. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to determine the sample. The researcher chose class VIII A as sample because the media has already been implemented by the teacher. The class consisted of 37 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used three kinds of instruments, they were: observation, interview, and questionnaire. The researcher used three major phases of data analysis, they were: data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing or verification. The researcher conducted the research in two meetings. There were three points of the results. The first, the process of teaching and learning speaking through Rap music media at the eighth grade of super regular class of MTs N 2 Bandar Lampung in the Second Semester of 2016/2017 Academic Year did not run well because the teacher did not apply the procedure of using Rap music media based on Segal’s theory. The second, the teacher’s problems in teaching speaking through rap music media were hard to take the Rap music media seriously, develop material successfully, manage the students and the time. The third, the problems faced by the students in learning speaking through rap music media were difficulties in studying through music, inefficient sound systems, confusion with wrong grammatical points or complicated sentences, and boredom with repetition of words.
