Abstract

ABSTRACT In order for speakers and listeners to exchange ideas with each other, communication is the process of speaking in the form of messages or thoughts that are conveyed from one party to another. This can happen if each participant is in one context of the conversation. However, when we communicate with others, often the speaker conveys information that is not detailed with what he has assumed about a topic of discussion that is being discussed so it often makes the listener misinterpret what the speaker wants to convey to the interlocutor. This happens when the listener does not understand the message conveyed by the speaker, whether spoken directly or verbally. Therefore, an understanding of presumption and the context of the situation when the communication process takes place is needed to understand what the speaker conveys through his utterance that is conveyed implicitly. The researcher focuses on analyzing the types of presuppositions in the utterances that occurred in the Mata Najwa talk show “Jokowi Diuji Pandemi” to reveal what speakers presuppose and to find what type of presupposition is the most dominant. In this study, the researcher used Yule’s theory in classifying the types of presuppositions. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method in the analysis. The main data used is the utterances in the conversation that took place between Mr. Joko Widodo and Mrs. Najwa Shihab in the Mata Najwa talk show “Jokowi Diuji Pandemi” which aired on April 23rd , 2020, at 20.00 WIB on TRANS7 or can be accessed on Najwa Shihab’s YouTube channel. For data collection, the researcher used documentation analyses to collect all the data. To analyze the data, the researcher used the Miles and Huberman theory which divides into three parts to analyze the data, namely: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. And to validate the data findings, the researcher used investigator triangulation. The result of this study is that the researcher found five types of presupposition based on Yule's theory, the researcher found five types iv of presupposition with a total finding of 57 data consisting of 13 data of existential presupposition, 9 data of factive presupposition, 17 data of lexical presupposition, 14 data of structural presupposition, 4 data of counterfactual presupposition, while the type of non-factive presupposition is not found in the conversational utterances in Mata Najwa's talk show “Jokowi Diuji Pandemi”. The truth meaning of presuppositional in the conversational utterances between Mr. Jokowi and Mrs. Najwa Shihab is controlled by the context. The effect given by presuppositions on conversational utterances is an effective conversation process where each participant understands what the speaker assumes in their utterances.
