Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF SPEECH ACT IN DR. TEDROS ADHANOM GHEBREYESUS’S SPEECH IN COVID-19 DAILY PRESS BRIEFING 20 MARCH 2020 By : HANNY FEBRIANA This research discussed about Speech Act delivered by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Covid-19 Daily Press Briefing 20 March 2020. The purpose of this research was to find out the types of Speech acts which presented by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in the Covid-19 Daily Press Briefing 20 March 2020 through the script and video. Speech Acts are devided into three acts; Locutionary acts, illocutionary acts, and perlocutionary acts. In this research, an illocutionary acts become main concern for the research. This research used descriptive qualitative method. This research used Searle’s classifications of illocutionary act to find out the types of illocutonary act used by the speaker and to find out the types of Speech acts which were dominantly presented by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghbreyesus. The researcher used note-taking and specific display as the instrument to find out the data. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus only performed four from five classifications of the illocutionary act they were representative, directive, commissive, and expressive. The data findings showed that the kinds of the illocutionary act performed by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, there was 13 Representative such as informing and stating, 7 directives such as suggesting, commanding, warning and advising,4 commisives such as planning and promising, 11 expressive such as thanking, greeting, expressing possibility, expressing sadness, expressing joy, and expressing realization, and 0 declarations (declarations did not found in this research). Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus dominated his speech with representative acts with the percentage 37,2%. Expressive was in the second position with 31,4%. Then, directive was in the third position with 20%. The last was commisive with 11,4%. The results showed that representative was the most dominant presented by Dr. Tedros.
