Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ABILITIES AND DIFFICULTIES IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT IN THE FIRST SEMESTER OF THE EIGHTH GRADE AT SMP N 2 PARDASUKA PRINGSEWU LAMPUNG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2021/2022 By RIZKI PUTRI DAMAYANTI Writing is one of the basic skills in the language. It has ability and problems in a writing activity. This research has the objective to know the students‟ ability in writing descriptive text and to know the students‟ problems in writing descriptive text faced by the Eighth-grade students of SMP N 2 Pardasuka, Pringsewu in the academic year of 2021/2022. The research design of this research is qualitative. In collecting the data, the researcher did some steps. They were preparing the research instrument, consulting the test to the teacher, and giving the test to the students. The data was collected on Tuesday, September 7 th, 2021 at the Eighth grade of SMP N 2 Pardasuka, Pringsewu in the academic year of 2021/2022. The population of this study is the Eight-grade students of SMP N 2 Pardasuka in the academic year of 2021/2022, but the researcher took one class (VIII B) as the subject. The class consisted of 28 students. To collect the data, the researcher used a test as the instrument. In analyzing the result of the test, the researcher used descriptive analysis. The result of this research shows that the mean score of the students is 64.11. It means that the writing ability of the Eighth-grade students of SMP N 2 Pardasuka, Pringsewu is on a fair level. The percentage of students‟ problems in aspect of organization (25%), content (12,5%), grammar (25%), mechanics (25%) and vocabulary (12,5%). Based on the result of the research, it is suggested that the Eighth-grade students of SMP N 2 Pardasuka should be given more explanation and exercise in writing descriptive text.
