Abstract

Vocabulary is one of important component in English. Student score in English subject including vocab still low. Most of student got score 57.7% under KBM. The objective of this research is to know whether there is a significant influence of using “Hidden word game ” toward students’ vocabulary mastery at the first semester of the seventh grade of SMPN 6 Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2016/2017. In this research, the writer used quasi experimental reseach by employing control group pre-test and post-test. The writer took two classes; they were: experimental class and control class. In the quasi experimental class, the writer used “Hidden word game”. In the control class the researcher used translation technique. There were three treatments in each class. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling technique. The sample of the study was class VIIA and VIIB of SMPN 6 Bandar Lampung. The numbers of the students were 60 students. They were experimental class that consisted of 30 students and the other is the control class that consisted of 30 students. In collecting the data, the writer used a test in the form of multiple choice questions that consisted of 20 items for pre-test and post-test after being tried-out with four options a, b, c, and d. After the writer conducted the treatments, the researcher conducted post-test. Before analyzing the data, the writer did test for normality and homogeneity to know whether the data had normal distribution and the variance of the data was homogenous or not. The result was the data had normal distribution and the variance of the data was homogenous. Therefore, to analyze the data, the researcher used independent sample t-test. From the data analysis, it was found that the result of t-test was 3.7. This result then was consulted to the score of tcritical (level of significance). In this case the level of significant 0.05 was 1.67. Ho is refused, if the score of tobserved >tcritical. From the analysis, the score of tobserved was greater than tcritical (3.7 > 1.67). So Ho refused, in other word, from this research, it was known that Hidden word can influences the students’ vocabulary mastery. So, there is significant influence of using Hidden word game towards students’ vocabulary mastery.
