Abstract

ABSTRACT As one of language components, speaking plays important role in order to know someone’s ability in a language and widely, included in English language. This research was proposed because most of language learners are still hard to use English in asking and giving information about someone or daily activities. Then, the purpose of this research was to know whether WH-Question has correlation with students’ ability in descriptive and speaking ability at seventh grade in SMP Assafina Bandar Lampung. There were 27 students chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling. This research used correlational research. The data consisted of written and spoken test. To collect data of student wh�question understanding the researcher gave the students multiple choice test consisted of 27 questions, meanwhile, in obtain speaking ability of students, the researcher asked the students to do monologue. The researcher used Pearson Product Moment correlationthrough SPSS 17.0 to analyze the data. The result of this research showed thatsig r obtained 0.01 which was less than alpha value (0.05). it means that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. For addition, the value rxy was 0.575 which was higher than the value of rtable 0.381. In conclusion, there is a significant correlation between students’ mastery wh question and their speaking ability in SMP Assafina Bandar Lampung. Keywords: Correlation, Speaking ability,Wh question
