Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF DEIXIS FOUND IN THE CATCHER IN THE RYE NOVEL BY J.D. SALINGER By NUR FAUZIAH Deixis is a meaning in context that always moving or changing depends on the situation of the speaker, place, and time that analyzed based on the context. Misunderstanding and misinterpretation do not only occur in oral expression, but also in written expressions such as in short stories or novels. In reading English novels, sometimes readers get difficulties in understanding the sentences to interpret the message. Therefore, understanding written expressions also needs the context, in this case, who, where and when the expressions are made, which is included in deixis theory. The objectives of this study was to find out the types of deixis and to classify the position of deixis used by Holden as the main character in J.D. Salinger’s novel. This study is focused on deixis in the novel entitled the Catcher in the Rye written by J.D. Salinger. This study used qualitative research design because it investigates the utterances of the deixis used by Holden as the main character in J.D. Salinger’s the Catcher in the Rye novel by using human as the instrument. In content analysis, the researcher read to understand the novel, listing the utterances by Holden as the main character in the Catcher in the Rye novel. Then, the researcher analyzed by identifying the data which were categorized as deixis, analyzing the data based on Yule’s theory: person, spatial, and temporal deixis. From the data analysis, the result of this study showed that: (1) there are three types of deixis used by Holden as the main character in J.D. Salinger’s novel consisted a person, spatial, and temporal deixis (2) there are three positions of deixis used by Holden as the main character in J.D. Salinger’s novel consisted Pronoun as Subject, Pronoun as Object, Adjective, and Adverb. Keywords: Pragmatics, Deixis, Novel, The Catcher in the Rye
