Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examines the construction of Islamic cosmology in the Nangguh Tradition a ritual of seeking permission from nature practiced by the Ranau indigenous community in South Sumatra and its relevance to Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s theory of Sacred Cosmology. This research is motivated by the prevailing shift toward modern cosmological paradigms that are anthropocentric and secular, which degrade nature into a mere object of mechanistic exploitation. Therefore, this study aims to uncover the spiritual dimensions and Islamic worldview embedded within this local tradition. This study employs a qualitative field research method with a philosophical-phenomenological approach. Primary and secondary data were gathered through direct field observation, in-depth interviews with customary leaders and tradition practitioners, and relevant document studies. The collected data were then critically analyzed using a descriptive-qualitative analysis technique to unpack the philosophical meaning behind the practice of the Nangguh Tradition. The results indicate that the Nangguh Tradition represents a form of Islamic cosmology that views nature as a theophanic entity (tajallī), revitalizes cosmic tawhid, and dissolves the subject-object divide by positioning environmental preservation on equal footing with religious worship. Based on these findings, this study recommends integrating these local spirituality-based cosmological values into environmental education curricula and practical ecological governance regulations. Keywords: Islamic Cosmology, Nangguh Tradition, Sacred Cosmology, Sacred Ecology.
